What advice would you give to someone who was willing to come out as gay to their family and friends? What's your experience been like?

Wow that's a great question! My two pieces of advice would be only come out when you are ready to do so, and allow your family a little time to be okay with it. If you're anything like me, it took a little time between realizing you were gay and being comfortable with it -- your family is going to need time in the same way. They will always love you but they've pictured your life and your future a certain way, and they need time to adjust those expectations. Hopefully, they will come around sooner rather than later but allow them some time.

As for friends, the good ones won't bat an eye and the ones who don't support you are friends you don't need in your life. There are so many great people out there who will love you for being you, and you would be doing yourself a disservice to keep a friendship going with someone who isn't supportive.

My coming out journey was a long one but has had a happy ending. I can't thank my family and friends enough!
